The RI to spend Christmas in Bath

Royal Crescent Bath

Paintings by RI members will be at the Gallery LeFort, 5 St Margaret's Buildings, Bath BA1 2LP in time for Christmas this year. This delightful gallery in the centre of historic Bath is hosting an RI exhibition this December. The show runs from 4th December to 13th January in the new year.

New Members

Congratulations to the three artists who were voted members of the RI this year. The successful candidates are Christopher Forsey, David Poxon and Ian Sidaway. Becoming a member of the RI is not easy, even to become a candidate is difficult and requires a good deal of determination. Consistently excellent work is expected of applicants and the overall standard is always very high.

Sheila Sanford (1922-2009)

Sheila Sanford, a member of the RI since 1984, has died. Born in Singapore she studied Fine Art at St. Martins School of Art, London where she met and married her husband Roy. For many years she worked as an illustrator during which time she had three sons. In the 1970s she and Roy moved to Shaftesbury, Dorset where Sheila continued to paint, finally moving to Uploaders for the last 30 years of her life.

Michael Cadman ARCA (1920-2010)

Michael Cadman, a member of the RI since 1970, has died. He was born in Epsom in 1920 and studied at Wimbledon School of Art from 1937 to 1941. He gained his Diploma in Painting from the Royal College of Art in 1944. He was a Lecturer at Croydon College of Art and at Epsom School of Art retiring from full time education in 1969 after which he moved to Cornwall. Latterly he lived in Dorset.

John Uht (1924-2010)

John Uht, a member of the RI since 1977, has died. Born in the USA in 1924, he studied art at the University of Illinois. He moved to the UK in the 1960s. He was a painter and sculptor and his sculptures were exhibited at the Royal Academy. He painted in both watercolours and oils becoming best known for his sensitive studies of clowns and circus people. John retired in 2006. He lived in Dorset.
